Triangle Project Argyle-Yucca The intersection of Argyle Avenue and Yucca Street is currently a barren asphalt island that reveals all too plainly its complete neglect. Not only is the intersection a gateway to historic Hollywood from the Hollywood Freeway, but it is also a passageway through which thousands of Hollywood residents and workers travel daily. If you live in Hollywood and especially if you live the Hollywood Hills east of the freeway, this area is very familiar to you. In recent years,
Hollywood has begun to emerge from the long period of neglect it endured
during the 80's and 90s. Today, however, the Argyle-Yucca Triangle unfortunately
remains what is has always been: someplace to ignore. Its primary features
are broken asphalt and wind-driven newspapers that litter the area.
The Argyle Civic Association iinitiated its project to beautify the
Argyle-Yucca triangle in 2000, garnering support from local businesses
and developers. The project has now been assumed by the City of Los
Angeles under the sponsorship of City Council president Eric Garcetti.
Mia Lehrer + Associates, a well-known Los Angeles landscape design firm, has drawn up a second, more comprehensive set of plans for the triangle (see image, right). which include a dedicated right-turn lane from Argyle southbound, jacaranda and sycamore trees, a pedestrian walkway and a seating area. The Triangle Project Argyle-Yucca will benefit all the people of Hollywood, as well as those who travel through or visit the district. Two major mixed-use deveopments are currently being proposed for lots adjacent to this intersection, making the completle of the Argyle-Yucca Triangle project even more urgent. The Argyle Civic Associataion fully supports the project, as well as the adjacent developments. For more information, contact Helen Leung in the office of City Council president Eric Garcetti. |
